Electronic Waste Disposal Announcement

In 2010, we decided to offer a drop-off for electronic waste as a community service, so that concerned neighbors could ensure their e-waste would be sent for proper recycling. We felt it was in line with the spirit of our mission to keep materials out of the landfill.

In December 2012, the well intentioned Covered Devices Recovery Act made it illegal to dispose of electronic waste in the trash and required electronics manufacturers to pay into a fund intended to cover the costs of recycling e-waste. Unfortunately the law does not require the manufacturers of electronics to cover the actual costs of recycling e-waste (see Diana Nelson Jones' article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).

There are few well-known places that take e-waste, so from 2012 many, many people have turned to CJ—from 2010 to 2015, our staff handled over 1,667,580 pounds of e-waste. Over 70% of that total since implementation of the law. Meanwhile, over the past 2 years, other recyclers and organizations stopped taking televisions simply because the handling costs cannot be covered.

We’ve struggled unsuccessfully for 2 years to cover the costs, so it is with regret that CJ’s Board of Directors is announcing that after June 30th, CJ will no longer accept e-waste for recycling. “This decision came after a great deal of deliberation on the part of the Board,” said Board President Howard Wein. “But it’s a necessary step for CJ due to the unsustainable costs of the service.”

Televisions and other e-waste can be taken to PRC’s “Hard to Recycle” events throughout Western Pennsylvania, or to eLoop, or to companies that sell electronics—check out this helpful brochure from PRC.  -- Mike Gable, Executive Director
