Greenhouse reuse project
We have a fun story to share from one of our customers... David Bangley. The pictures show two of his farm projects built with CJ materials. Here's a summary in his own words...
This greenhouse is in its third installation. It was originally designed to be supported against a building, but is now a free standing structure. The new OSB back wall is supported by a wood I-beam from CJ.
To protect the OSB from rain and humidity I needed high-grade exterior latex paint. CJ had an unopened 5 gallon bucket of "Eat-n-Park Green." The color is perfect and dark enough to absorb some heat too.
To hold the plastic panels down in the wind, I found composite decking material in 12' lengths in CJ's lumber department. This material is expensive at the home stores, but with CJ I could afford to use it for wind battens. It is sunlight resistant, and never needs paint.
The greenhouse was installed last spring, and survived the winds of Ike last fall without a scratch. The whole structure is a tribute to reuse. The polycarbonate panels are hand-me-downs from a greenhouse in Ohio. The door and window were taken out of our house during the construction of an addition.
The mobile chicken coop is another study in the art of reuse. The windows, multitude of hinges, and screws that hold it together were all sourced from CJ. The wheels came from a yard sale. Roof shingles were leftovers from a garage. Steel components in the trailer frame came from Six Recycling in East Liverpool, OH - a source for I-beams, angle iron, pipe and brackets. Alas, the wood was mostly purchased new... but there are a few 2x4's from CJ in the mix.
A word to the wise shopper - CJ's hinge collection is at an all time high water mark. Hinges are expensive, and the new ones at big box stores are of poor quality. Aside from the economic incentive of buying to reuse, CJ hinges are generally heavy duty and often "Made in the USA." I've seen lots of nice cabinet and door hinges lately.

CJ Q&A
Could you offer a class on how to make a rain barrel? They're so dang expensive to buy but are so simple to make. I'd love to learn how to make one. -- Leanne
Leanne -- In the very near future, CJ will be embarking on a complete renovation of our facility. Plans include the creation of space that will alow us to host various kinds of classes. We appreciate you letting us know that you'd be interested in rain barrel workshops. In the meanwhile... the following information may be useful to you:
- You may want to check out Nine Mile Run Watershed Association's website. They have a rain barrel PDF that you might find helpful regarding rain barrel construction.
- The Westmoreland Conservation District is holding two Stormwater for Homeowners/Rainbarrel workshops on Tuesday, March 30. One workshop is in the afternoon and the other in the evening. Please download this flyer for more info and to register.
Hope this helps. -- Cozmo
