Rain garden class & native plants
Construction Junction is very excited about our expanding relationship with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and their Center for Native Plants at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve. Through this collaboration we brought you a native plants class last week and are offering another class this Saturday, April 24th, from 11am to 1pm. This weeks class, presented by Audubon's new Native Plant Center Director, will focus on rain gardens.
In addition to offering classes in collaboration with Audubon, CJ is going to be carrying some of the Center's more popular natives in our store. Plants will be available for purchase next weekend and will include those listed below plus heirloom tomatoes, ethnic peppers, specialty eggplants, basil and other herbs. Please know that a much larger selection of natives is available at Audubon's Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve facility in the North Hills. Sylvania Natives, in Pittsburgh's East End area, is another great source for native plants.

The CJ Buzz
We're very excited to announce, for our April customer reward and in celebration of Earth Day, the return of the much loved Litterbug Bobbleheads. During the month of April, staff will be hiding 10 Litterbug Bobbleheads throughout CJ’s retail space. Track down a Bobblehead, bring it to CJ’s cashier when you’re ready to check out and get 20% off your purchase. Our Litterbug Bobbleheads have been given to us courtesy of Pennysylvania Resources Council (PRC).
The Litterbug Bobbleheads could be hiding in drawers, cabinets, display cases or behind items. We're going to get creative! We do promise however that all Litterbugs... ten each day for the entire month, will be accessible and within easy reach. The earlier you arrive... the greater your chances of finding a Litterbug and saving 20% off your purchase.
Remember, Litterbug Bobbleheads will be escaping onto CJ’s sales floor throughout the month of April. Have fun hunting!

Rain Garden Class
Construction Junction, in collaboration with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and their Center for Native Plants at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve, will be holding a class on rain gardens on Saturday, April 24th from 11am to 1pm.
Installing a rain garden is a simple, inexpensive landscape tool homeowners can use to help protect water quality in the Pittsburgh area. The class will highlight the environmental benefits rain gardens provide and introduce you to the basics of planning and installing one of your own.
CJ Q&A
Hi. I am having trouble finding a place that takes used cooking oil. Do you guys recycle that stuff or know of a place where I can take it. I have about 15 gallons. -- Matt
Matt -- We envision ourselves as Pittsburgh's Reuse Mall. Afterall, you can recycle lots of things right here at CJ including bicycles, toner and ink cartridges, batteries, ballasts, flourescent tubes and CFLs, medical equipment, scrap metal, non-functioning appliance containing freon, everything the city recycling center takes and of course... our mainstay, used building materials. But now we happily add one more item to our menu... used cooking oil. Here are the details:
When you come to Construction Junction to drop off your recyclables, you can now recycle your used cooking oil with our friends at GTECH. Vegetable oil only, no lard or bacon fat please.
ReFuel Pgh is a new program of GTECH in partnership with Fossil Free Fuel that reduces air and water pollution and supports GTECH’s work with young people.
Waste cooking oil is a problem for our municipalities and our rivers. It clogs our pipes, causing ruptures and constricting our sewer system’s capacity during a storm event. Petroleum-diesel used in Pittsburgh is responsible for carcinogenic air pollution, climate change emissions and millions of dollars at leave our region and the country.
You can find instructions on how to donate at www.refuelpgh.org. GTECH’s hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. For large deliveries or if you would like to learn more about how your restaurant or organization can donate oil call (412) 241-1013 or email refuelpgh at gtechstrategies dot org.
Cozmo’s Message of the Week
Isn't it fun that CJ is selling plants produced by a local nonprofit and small urban farm. Just in time too... now that May 1st is here, the chance for another hard frost is fairly slim. Bet you wonder how a dog knows these things. I know how to hang with the right people.
