Towards zero waste
Every day, tons and tons of disposable cutlery and food waste ends up in landfills.
The environmental and social impacts resulting from the manufacture and disposal of these products are far reaching, particularly considering they're used just once and then permanently discarded.
For example, plastic utensils are made from petroleum, a deleterious and non-renewable resource. Paper plates, cups and bowls are made with paper, often at the cost of forest habitats and cultural ways of life. And food waste (by volume) is the largest contributor to the production of methane gas... a green house gas emitted by landfills.
Naturally, because of who we are and what we do... it was only a matter of time before we began thinking about how we could minimize waste associated with our Steel City Big Pour. As such our goal is to make the Big Pour a Zero Waste Event.
At this year's Big Pour, with the support of IKEA, the services of AgRecycle, Inc. and our Zero Waste Coordinator, Justin Parisi of CMU's Tepper School of Business, we will be composting all post-consumer food and beverage waste, plates, cups, bowls, napkins and utensils. The cutlery will be compostable! We'll also be recycling all glass, aluminum, plastic and cardboard.
Check out our Zero Waste Event page to understand what to expect.
The CJ Buzz
CJ is a seven day a week operation... meaning we're open every day of the week. Because of this we'll be closed on Sunday for the Fourth of July holiday but open on Monday, July 5th.
So for all of you who will be off work this coming Monday, why not come to Construction Junction and see what groovy things we have in our store. We'll be here and we'll leave the light on for you.

CJ Q&A
How come some of the items pictured in your recent arrivals list a discount and a month? -- Janet
Janet -- As items "age" on our sales floor we discount them in 10% increments. The blackboard near the entrance outlines the current discount available based on the age of items. The relevant month each item arrives is noted on our price tags. The older the item... the steeper the discount. For example, items from June are now 10% off, May 20%, April 30% and so on to a maximum of 75% off. Hope this helps. -- Cozmo
