Unbuilding Braddock Hospital

Our deconstruction staff is currently participating in the largest deconstruction/salvage project in our organization’s 10 year history.  Through a unique partnership among Heritage Community Initiative’s MOVE-IT Job Training Program, Carnegie Mellon University’s Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research and UPMC, CJ will divert “significant quantities” of useable building materials prior to the demolition of Braddock Hospital.

We will feature items salvaged from the hospital in future e-Blasts and will present a final tonnage diverted from the landfill at the completion of the project which is expected to last through September.  We appreciate UPMC’s willingness to grant access to the hospital.

More important than the diversion tonnage is that this project is the concluding field exercise in Heritage’s 10 week green jobs training program funded by a grant from the US Department of Labor.  During the training program, 22+ Mon Valley residents were introduced to a variety of the region’s green jobs and received job readiness and certification training.  This is the first of four, 10 week training modules and Heritage is looking for employers who might have an interest in hiring trainees for internships.  Each trainee comes with a $2000 wage subsidy to help cover the costs of integrating a new employee into the workplace.  CJ plans to hire some of the trainees to complete the Braddock Hospital project.

The CJ Buzz

As you've just read, our deconstruction crew is working on a large project and as a result a number of good waves of merchandise are going to be arriving at Construction Junction over the next few weeks.  We're not sure exactly what will be arriving when, but we thought we'd share a list of what we expect in case you might be looking for any of these types of items.

Expected items include: ceiling tile, file cabinets, metal shelving, supply cabinets, oak wall bumpers, commercial stainless steel counters, stainless steel sinks, and utilitarian laminate cabinets (like you might find in an office).

CJ Q&A

We often get questions about the recycling bins in our parking lot... to sort or not to sort?  The bins are managed by the City of Pittsburgh so we went right to the source and we're reprinting the answer received verbatim below.

Recyclables are still required to be separated as listed on each dumpster.  The materials are taken to different places for processing based on market prices and contracts with local processors.  At times, you may see a City truck mixing different materials together in an attempt to keep up with the volume of recycling.  When this happens, the materials are processed under the City’s “single stream” recycling contract.  We do not always mix the materials because we receive more revenue if different commodities are separated.  Please remember that only the listed items are accepted.  Tires, yard debris, and household trash are not accepted at this site.  Please report anyone you see illegally dumping these items to the City Recycling Division or to the folks at Construction Junction.  Thank you.

Shawn Wigle, Recycling Supervisor, City of Pittsburgh
