CJ's new HR project
In 2008, Construction Junction submitted a grant request to The Forbes Funds asking for support to help us build the human resources capacity of our organization. In our grant request, we explained that while CJ has had financial and community engagement success over the years, our organizational infrastructure has lagged behind. We expressed our concern that an inadequate human resources management system would prevent CJ from being optimally effective and realizing our full potential. To address this issue, we requested the support of a human resources consultant to help us understand where we are and how we can best move forward to make systemic improvements.
Additionally, we suggested, that in collaboration with The Forbes Funds, we use this project to generate a human resources model specifically tailored for social enterprise nonprofits where the blending and balancing of monetary performance with mission performance is particularly challenging.
The Forbes Funds liked our proposal and through an RFP process we solicited project bids from local human resource experts. The RFP highlighted the importance of CJ being able to attract and retain a core of talented staff and outlined the following additional project goals:
- Revise and update CJ’s employee manual including all relevant policies and procedures.
- Develop employee job descriptions and performance standards that allow CJ to measure performance, identify areas for improvement and support employee’s long-term development.
- Assess the competiveness of CJ’s compensation and benefits package and develop strategies to close any gaps, if discovered.
- Explore options for performance-based pay.
After a thorough reveiw of all proposals received, we selected a company called 3C and expect to complete this project by the end of first quarter 2009. To date, the project is going very well and 3C has been responsive, time oriented, tactical, and all around fantastic. They've been able to make sense of what we couldn't for the last ten years, documenting the what, how and who of what we do.
We are confident that this project will make CJ better, providing long-term organizational stability, thorough HR compliance and an increased level of professionalism among our staff and management systems.
The CJ Buzz
CJ now has a Nine Mile Run Rain Barrel Initiative display table. We're very excited about this for all of the obvious reasons, but also because of the rain barrel itself which is made locally using recycled materials.
Be sure to check out this display next time you pay CJ a visit. You'll be able to: 1) get a first hand look at the very well designed rain barrel, 2) learn more about the issues associated with stormwater runoff and 3) understand how you as a homeowner can be part of the solution.
For more information and to purchase rain barrels, visit Nine Mile Run Watershed Association or call 412.371.8779.

County & City recycling Christmas trees
Christmas trees can be recycled through Jan. 23 at four parks, county officials said.
The drop off sites are in the parking lots of Boyce, North, South and Settler's Cabin parks, which will be open for residents to drop off their used trees during normal park hours. The trees will be turned in to mulch for use in Allegheny County's nine regional parks.
Decorations, lights and tinsel should be removed from the trees.

Hi... Just wondering if the $25 Farm Sink #5 (from your 6/23 - 6/29/08 e-Blast) is still available? Thanks! Andrea
Andrea -- No, we're sorry that particular farm sink is gone. We do however still have Farm Sink #4 from that same e-Blast. The price on that sink is $40 but since it is from last May you can take 75% off and get it for $10!! -- Cozmo
