Regional reuse

Construction Junction recently received a valuable email from Katie Joost at The Loading Dock in Baltimore, Maryland.  The Loading Dock, Baltimore's local nonprofit building material reuse facility, has created a national nonprofit organization called ReDO which is short for Reuse Development Organization.

ReDO promotes reuse as an environemtally sound, socially beneficial and economical means for managing surplus and discarded materials.  To this end... ReDo has created a listing and map of architectural salvage & building material reuse centers in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.  Since we know that our customers travel to CJ from hundreds of surrounding zip codes, we thought it would be helpful to share this information with you.  Please feel free to print, post and share these flyers.

ReDo's website also includes a directory of reuse centers across the country as does the Building Material Reuse Association's (BMRA) website.

The CJ Buzz

You may not know this, but CJ is home to a number of other nonprofit organizations including The Pillow Project, Free Ride, Steel City Biofuels, and GTECH.

The latest addition to this line up is Creative Reuse Pittsburgh, a project supported in part by a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund.  CRP's mission is to get re-useable materials which are ordinarily discarded back into circulation through programs that explore and encourage new ways of utilizing these wasted resources.  As such, Creative Reuse Pittsburgh:

1) Collects reusable discards from businesses and other organizations in the region.

2) Offers unique hands-on creative arts programs and activities for fairs and festivals, schools, corporate events and community centers.

3) Sells materials to the public by appointment (call 412-202-4036).  Prices range from .10 cents per item to $10 for a mix and match bag.  Some items are sold by the pound and sample kits are $15 each.  Click on the photos to see examples of available items.

CJ Q&A

Hi!  I work for a greenhouse and we have a lot of #5 (6") plastic pots.  I know these are recyclable and I'm more than happy to drop them off to the recycling dumpsters in your parking lot, but I thought you might want me to donate them instead.  We're talking about 3-5,000 of them.  Please let me know which you'd rather have me do.  Thanks so much!  -- Rachel

Rachel --  Life is grand in how the stars align sometimes.  It just so happens that we recently heard from the local Audobon Society up at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve in regards to any pots we may have to help them with their native plant production.  Call their Executive Director, Jim Bonner because the two of you are a match made in heaven.  -- Cozmo
