Creative reuse
We're always amazed at the things CJ customers do with the treasures they find in our store. Here's a great story from Todd that highlights the beauty of creative reuse.
During a very extensive renovation I'm doing on a house in Marshall Township, I've made several trips to CJ to donate lots of perfectly good, but not to my taste items that I've taken out of the house. Each trip I look around for something interesting to incorporate in the project. On one trip I found an odd cast iron piece that I assume was trim over a door or window in a previous life.
The house had an ugly fireplace with a brick radius opening and no mantle and I thought this odd architectural piece would definitely be a cool mantle. The 'mantle' had rust like peppercorns on it, was deeply pitted and rusted through in some places. I cleaned it up with a wire wheel to a nice rusty, pitted patina and considered my options for applying a finish. After trying several on the inside of the piece I decided to leave it as is.
Then I made a mounting bracket the same shape as the mantle out of a 2" x 12" and drilled about a dozen holes in it to meet drywall anchors so the weight could be evenly distributed. The piece has to weigh over 100 pounds.
Then I built up the surface of the fireplace 1-1/2" to cover half the depth of the brick radius, mounted the bracket and mantle to the wall, built a hearth and then covered the whole thing with stone veneer working around the shape of the mantle.

Pittsburgh Visionary Arts Festival
August 7, 2009
The first Pittsburgh Visionary Arts Festival is bringing together more than 50 local visionary artists and art innovators into a single venue.
For three full days, these artists will share their work, vision and unique ideas in a friendly outdoors festival setting. The VAF will feature a rich diversity of minds, covering the full spectrum of art mediums: from painting to mixed media, from digital media to sound art, through recycled and self-taught art… and beyond!
This festival is intended primarily as a visual and sensory experience of art. While much of the work presented will be available for purchase, a large portion of the work will not be for sale. Experience a slice of Pittsburgh’s greatest visionary art, in a festival that hopes to decorate your soul rather than your living room!
Free and open to the public. For more information go to www.pghvisionaryartsfestival.com.
CJ Q&A
Do you take automobile tires? -- Gerard M.
Gerard -- The bad news... Construction Junction doesn't accept tires and neither does the City of Pittsburgh at their recycling drop off center in our parking lot. The good news... the Pennsylvania Resources Council does. Tires are accepted at their Hard to Recycle collection events held through out the season in various locations across southwestern Pennsylvania. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, September 26 at the Kennywood Shops in West Mifflin. Click here to learn more. -- Cozmo
Cozmo’s Message of the Week
Believe it or not, the other night CJ was host to the Monroeville Chamber of Commerce for an after business hours happy hour event. A grand time was had by all. So grand in fact we'd like to do it again. If you think your organization might like to hold a similiar event at Construction Junction, please give Bonnie Rolison a call at 412-243-5025 x12.
