Big Pour news

Latest Big Pour ticket update (Monday 8/3/09 2:45 pm)...  The ProArts Ticket website to purchase tickets online is now up and running.  There may continue to be intermittent problems however throughout the afternoon as this is a server related issue at the company hosting the ProArts website.  We advise that you keep trying if you experience difficulty or call ProArts at 412-394-3353 to purchase tickets over the phone.  We apologize for the inconvenience. -- the CJ Team

After two short years, CJ’s annual fundraiser, the Steel City Big Pour, has established itself as one of the most innovative craft beer tasting events in the country.  This year’s event will feature beer samples from 32 craft breweries, food from 20 local restaurants, and great live art and music.

Familiar event staples return this year including the custom kegerator raffle, specialty Organic and Belgian sections, a brew crafted exclusively for the Big Pour by East End Brewing, and chain saw art.  As in previous Big Pours, this year’s “pourable art” theme continues with a hot glass pour and concrete pour.

To highlight our environmental mission of reuse (and recycling) this year’s Big Pour will also feature a recycled fashion show (models will circulate through the crowd wearing outfits made of recycled products), beer glasses made from beer bottles by the Pittsburgh Glass Center, and event bags handcrafted from reused T-shirts.

But wait there’s more… we’re also introducing two new features that we’re really pumped about… the Brewer’s Creative Reuse Award and the Steel City Uni-Growler.  While the Big Pour highlights the great product craft brewers make, the Award highlights the production choices they make in areas such as energy efficiency, packaging, waste management, and transportation.

This year’s winners are Pittsburgh’s own East End Brewery and Bell’s Brewery from Galesburg, Michigan.  Great Lakes Brewery from Cleveland, OH received an honorable mention.

The Steel City Uni-Growler, a 64 oz. glass jug with a screw cap, will be sold at the Big Pour.  Currently growler use is cool but not yet a mainstream practice.  One of the impediments is that establishments only fill “their own” growlers.  As an alternative, the Steel City Uni-Growler will be accepted at all local craft beer establishments listed on the jug.  “We love the idea of growlers because it supports our mission or conservation and reuse” said Lagnese “and when you purchase one you’ll be financially supporting CJ.”

We are also excited to be working with our sponsors and art partners to hold several Before the Big Pour Events where a limited number VIP tickets will be raffled.  Three sets of two tickets each will be raffled to gain admittance to the brewer’s lunch and second session of the event.

Tickets for the Big Pour go on sale Monday, August 3, and are only available through ProArts Tickets.  For more… click the Steel City Big Pour icon in the upper left hand corner of this home page or go to www.steelcitybigpour.org.

The CJ Buzz

The first Before the Big Pour Event will be held at the Pittsburgh Glass Center on Friday August 7, from 6 to 9pm.  See www.pittsburghglasscenter.org for more details.

Attention craft beer drinkers... CJ wants your empty beer bottles.  Specifically your 22 oz bottles with screened (no paper) labels.  The Glass Center will be making drinking glasses from these beer bottles that'll be for sale at the Big Pour.

CJ Q&A

I am looking for a loveseat.  Simple design... maybe danish modern style with a wood frame and cushions that could be reupholstered.  Anything available?  Any bookcases?  Do you carry much furniture?  -- Susan M.

Susan --  CJ sells hundreds and hundreds of pieces of furniture a year and on occassion we get items of danish modern styling.  We usually always have at least a few bookcases on hand.  Our inventory tends to come and go very quicklyso it's best to stop in as much as you can.  If a danish modern loveseat comes in we'll be sure to put it in our weekly e-Blast.  -- Cozmo
