Red, Ripe & Roasted
August 16, 2009

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, in conjunction with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, presents the fifth annual Tomato and Garlic Festival, Red, Ripe & Roasted, on Sunday, August 16, from 11 am to 5 pm.  This fun and flavorful festival, located in Phipps' outdoor garden, helps the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank by encouraging local gardeners and visitors to donate fresh produce.

The festival will include a local farmers' market (including garlic for planting), chef demos and tastings, a tomato judging contest and much more.  Doug Oster, popular contributor and co-host of local gardening shows and columns has partnered with the event, and will be on-site to participate in the festival activities.

Make sure to bring your biggest, smallest and ugliest tomatoes for the judging contest, which will be judged by a renowned panel of judges within the local green scene.  The event will take place rain or shine!

Admission to the festival is free and visitors are encouraged to bring a bag or basket of produce for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.  Those who donate will also receive free admission to the Conservatory.

CJ Q&A

I actually have a silly question... I cannot make it to the Steel City Big Pour at this point in time (wish I could) but, are you selling t-shirts from the event and if so, how can I purchase one without being on site?  -- Tami

Tami --  Not to worry!  CJ is in the process of adding e-commerce functionality to our website.  Once that new capability is up and running we'll have Big Pour t-shirts available for purchase along with a few other things.  We're not sure exactly when we're going to get this new aspect of our website up and running but it'll be relatively soon.  We'll make an annoucement in our weekly e-Blast when we do.  -- Cozmo
