Pittsburgh's Day of Giving
The Pittsburgh Foundation has launched a major initiative designed to boost individual charitable giving and support local nonprofit organizations. The initiative is called PittsburghGives and we think it's really great!
PittsburghGives is a web-based directory of nonprofit organizations developed with on-line giving tools that allows folks to research and give to local charitable organizations online.
We’re specifically telling you about this because the Foundation is celebrating with a special 'Match Day' on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. On that day, starting at 10 am, the Foundation will provide matching grants for donations made through PittsburghGives and expects to generate a minimum of $1.2 million in total contributions to eligible nonprofit organizations.
Gifts of $50 or more (up to $2,500 per individual) will be matched 50 percent by the Foundation until allocated funds are exhausted. For example, a gift of $250 will receive a match of $125 from the Foundation for a total charitable gift of $375. If you tend to make charitable donations at this time of year as many people do... this is a great way to make your donation go even further!
Construction Junction is in the process of creating our profile on PittsburghGives so you won’t be able to donate to us on Match Day but there are over 300 other great nonprofits to choose from. Go to PittsburghGives and search for nonprofits by name, zip code or category. For instance, 27 nonprofits are listed under the Environmental Quality, Protection and Beautification category.
To participate, go to www.pittsburghgives.org and create a log in name, find the nonprofits you want to support and mark them as your favorites and then be ready to log in at 10 am on October 28, 2009 to make your donation(s) in support of your selected nonprofit(s).
We hope this Match Day is really successful and look forward to having Construction Junction listed on PittsburghGives in the future.
The CJ Buzz
Have you been wanting to bring some donations to Construction Junction but live out near Cranberry and just haven't been able to make the trip to our East End facility as of yet? If so, then Saturday, October 17th is your lucky day. CJ will have our big box truck at the Boot Up Green event being held in the LaSalle Plaza - Route 19, Cranberry Township, from 9 am to 1 pm.
In addition to building materials, you'll also be able to recycle eWaste, used medical equipment and other hard to recycle items at this event. Click here for more information and thanks in advance for helping us fill our truck with donations.

40th Anniversary Celebration for the Group Against Smog & Pollution
October 23, 2009The Group Against Smog & Pollution (GASP) is planning a gala event at the Union Project to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. During the event, GASP will also recognize and share the stories of 40 local environmental heroes who were nominated by fellow western Pennsylvanians.
Guess who is being recognized as one of our local environmental heroes... Yes, CJ's very own executive director, Mike Gable. Click here to read the nomination letter submitted for Mike Gable. All of us at CJ appreciate this award and would like to thank the staff at GASP for the honor and recognition.
To support GASP, purchase tickets and attend the event or consider becoming a sponsor of this event. Click here for a Sponsorship Form.
CJ Q&A
I am interested in getting rid of an old iron that is broken and I was wondering if you knew of any resources for recycling/reusing old irons. -- Meredith
Meredith -- We get this kind of 'appliance recycling' question often. We work with eLoop llc, an eWaste recycler. Fortunately, in addition to eWaste, eLoop llc can accept and recycle broken small appliances at our store. The recycling fee for this service is $5. FYI... we also accept broken appliances that contain freon but handle them differently and charge a $10 freon disposal fee. Thanks for asking. -- Cozmo
