Recycling inspiration
Back in early September, a customer sent us a link to an article in The New York Times called One Man's Trash. The article is about a man who, 12 years ago, started a for profit construction company that builds low-income housing out of recycled materials. The article includes a beautiful slide show of his work.
Both the article and slide show are well worth checking out. Additionally, the article includes a link to an archive of 'Times Topics' about Recycling of Waste Materials which, from our perspective, could easily consume any interested reader for days. Articles like this one really get us going at CJ. A shared vision is passion's most potent fuel and reading this article makes us ask how we can do more. Specifically, how can CJ:
- capture more and more of Pittsburgh's building industry waste materials before they go to the landfill,
- ensure that more folks know we sell low cost building materials that help make home renovation more affordable, and
- inspire more 'out of the box' thinking in terms of creative reuses for traditional building materials.
The answers to these questions, in connection to our mission, challenge us every day and help to chart our future. For example, a few years back, CJ's Board of Directors decided to embark on a large scale project to renovate our existing 100 year old warehouse into a LEED Gold facility in an effort to further grow our community impact. It's a very exciting project and we'll be talking with you about it in the months to come. We say "talking" because we're going to be looking for your input and participation. In the meantime though, you'll be happy to know that heat and coffee are part of the plan.
The CJ Buzz
When I asked Bonnie, our donation manager, for the weekly Buzz I got an answer I didn't expect. "There is no buzz" she said. What does this mean?!? Well in traditional nonprofit advocacy circles I think it translates to a Call To Action to Donate, Donate, Donate! If you already donate excess materials in your life to Construction Junction... we thank you. But what about your employer? Maybe the company you work for has excess building materials laying around? We have a big truck and a free pick up service for large donations... and could be at your doorstep very soon.
