Esteemed thought-leader Margaret Crawford recently convened an urban planning studio using the premise: "Cambridge Could Be A Better Place to Live If...". She wanted to apply the Everyday Urbanism design theory, which emphasizes the importance of lived experience in creating urbanity.
Students canvassed the city, and interviewed as many different people as possible - public officials, university faculty, school children, parents, cab drivers, baristas, community advocates, local business owners, priests, school officials, homeless people, real estate agents, teenagers, and university students. This intense engagement with the community was illuminating and, at times, inspiring.
The resulting document - 101 Urban Salvations - presents innovative and visionary proposals that are grounded in the realities of urban experience. Is this a new form of planning? Margaret Crawford says, "Perhaps." In these times of economic restraint and reduced expectations, this approach is responsive and flexible, and isn't an all or nothing method. It's a small-scale accumulated approach rather than a massive retooling of cities.
See how 101 Urban Salvations can be used as a planning and visioning tool, and how our panel applies it to explore "Pittsburgh Could Be a Better Place to Live If... ."
