County & City recycling Christmas trees

Christmas trees can be recycled through Jan. 23 at four parks, county officials said

The drop off sites are in the parking lots of Boyce, North, South and Settler's Cabin parks, which will be open for residents to drop off their used trees during normal park hours.  The trees will be turned in to mulch for use in Allegheny County's nine regional parks.

Decorations, lights and tinsel should be removed from the trees.

Additionally, this holiday season, extra City of Pittsburgh recycling crews will be deployed to grab Christmas trees at the curb on residents' designated recycling days," said Shawn Wigle, the City's recycling coordinator.  "The trees must be free from decorations and placed at the curb on residents' recycling days in order to be reclaimed as mulch."

Christmas trees may also be recycled throughout January at the Public Works Recycling Drop-off Centers of: East End, North Dallas Ave. at Hamilton Ave.; Hazelwood, Melanchton Ave. off the 5200 block of Second Ave.; and West End, next to Herschel Field.

The City's 2009 recycling schedules, sent to residents this week and posted on the City's Web site (www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/pw/html/collection_schedules.html), determine residents' recycling days.
