Learn how to harvest rainwater from your roof and divert it for on-site usage in the landscape.  Return home equipped with the knowledge to install a rain barrel.  It’s easier than you might think.

Citizen Scientist: Monarch Larva Monitoring

Join us as we host the CITIZEN SCIENCE AT AUDUBON program! Citizen Science is you and your family participating in actual scientific research in your neighborhood. Tie your learning into something that can really make a difference for our environment!  Many citizen science programs are simply identifying and counting plants and animals. The data collected is used to study population trends regionally over time. For example, the Christmas Bird Count Project collected data has been used to document significant shifts in bird populations, possibly due to climate change. Counting procedures are very simple. Prior knowledge of the subject is not necessary.

Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania is the local coordinator for many of these projects and offers training. Training sessions teach you what you to look for and how to report it properly. This session will teach participants about Monarch butterflies and their larva and how to collect data on them throughout the summer! This class is perfect for families introducing science to their children in a fun way!

This presentation and workshop will be held at the ACTION-Housing Pittsburgh Green House located at 308 N. Sheridan Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15206: across the street from the East Liberty Home Depot. CJ and ACTION HOUSING staff will demonstrate how to sand and finish a wood floor in this hands-on workshop. Participants will be given the opportunity to ‘test drive’ the sander on this 110-year old home’s wooden floor. We will also discuss different finishes for the floor with presenters from Artemis Environmental.
Students should come prepared to learn and work hard. Closed toe shoes and long pants are a must.
Cost $20 per person/$25 for couples.

Cold Frame Construction Class

Glass Window Glazing Workshop
Saturday March 23, 2013 11 am -1 pm

Instructor Michelle Cicero will show students how to clean, cut and reglaze windows for their homes! She covers everything from safely removing broken glass from the window frame to cutting and installing new glass, glazing and epoxy repair! Michelle will supply the needed tools and will give students the chance to do each step on a practice window.

Basic Bicycle Repair & Maintenance- WORKSHOP FULLY BOOKED

The workshop will introduce people to riding/commuting in the city & will consist of outfitting a bike for city riding, how to ride in traffic and then most importantly basic roadside repairs. Suitable for age 12 and above (under 16s, please bring an adult as well as a bike).
BYOB (bring your own bike) to work on, if you can't BYOB the instructor will pair you with someone who has a bike or you'll work on a FreeRide bike. Tools will be available to use during the workshop.

Window Green House Presentation and Terrarium Class

Our amazing friends from greenSinner will be on hand to show you how to make a greenhouse out of old windows. greenSinner will walk through the construction of a green house made from old windows. The presentation will include advice on materials and tools as well as using window green houses to grow and display plants and help from greenSinners in selecting the right kind of windows. Afterwards greenSinner will help participants create their own terrariums.

Considering renovating your home or small business? Would you like to receive personalized renovation advice from a professional designer? Then come to Construction Junction on Saturday August 25th, from 11am-2pm, for a free renovation mini-consultation!
 
Volunteers from the Design Consults program—architects, landscape architects, and interior designers— will be available to discuss exterior and interior renovation plans. It is very important to bring plenty of photos of your property to share with the consultants.
 
These mini-consultations serve to promote the formal Design Consults program, a signature program of the Design Center. This program provides affordable, on-site consultations to help property owners explore their renovation options, understand the impact of their investments, and realize the value of preservation and design. Whereas these mini-consults will last :15 minutes, a formal on-site Design Consult lasts up to two hours.
 
After the workshop, gather inspiration for your renovation by exploring Construction Junction’s unique and affordable inventory of home wares and recycled building materials.

FreeRide Bike Commuting and Basic Roadside Repairs Class

How to outfit yourself and your bicycle before hitting the streets. Plus we will cover some basic problems and repairs often seen while commuting in the city. We will discuss helmets fitting, lights, fenders. traffic laws, bike lanes and a few other things. Students will learn how to fix a flat, adjust their brakes and fix a popped chain. Bring you own bike or we will have on here for you to work on.

Desk Painting Volunteer Day

Saturday, December 1, 2012 2pm to 5pm

Join us as we partner with local non-profit Gwen's Girls to paint desks for their participants' computer lab. Gwen's Girls works with local girls offering support and educational help.

Several of the girls have been selected to create ideas for personalized desks for the computer lab. On Saturday afternoon, 12/1/12, CJ is looking for artist and volunteers to help bring these ideas to life! Participants will paint the desks with the help of local artist Daviea Davis!

We have had several people ask us for this class to repeat! Never New Furniture Workshop

Sunday December 9, 2012 2 pm -- 5 pm

Join instructor, carpenter, and owner of Never New Furniture Zac Tefft as he demonstrates framing out a tin ceiling tile for use as a cabinet door. Zac and his partner Meg have created beautiful and fun furniture out of items that others might throw away. During the demonstration Zac will show you how to frame out the tile for a cabinet, explain how you can add supports for a handle and how you can use the tile to create interesting cabinet doors as well as other furniture! After class grab some of the tin ceiling tiles for sale at CJ to start making your own cool art pieces just in time for the holidays!

Home Energy Efficiency and Power Choice Seminar

Energy Efficiency in Buildings:
Occupant behavior and maintenance habits can affect utility consumption, comfort, and safety.
Jonathan Nadle, Senior Energy Auditor, Conservation Consultants, Inc., a Pittsburgh nonprofit promoting responsible energy use in homes and other buildings.  


Mr. Nadle, a RESNET/BPI certified home energy auditor, will be discussing residential buildings and showing many examples of what not to do and what to do to increase your home's comfort, safety, and efficiency.
 
The Pennsylvania Power Choice Process, Making The Green Choice In Electricity
Greg Winks, Market Outreach Coordinator, Community Energy, Inc., a renewable energy supplier in Pennsylvania. 


Mr. Winks will be talking about the choice that every consumer has in selecting their energy generation company for their electric service.  He will review the process involved in selecting a supplier, the different choices a consumer has and how to evaluate them, and understanding the benefits of renewable energy, including energy security, clean air and green job creation.
